Stamford, Conn. – May 1, 2014 – AmeriCares is rushing an emergency shipment of medical aid to an Arkansas clinic treating tornado survivors. The delivery, which includes nearly $300,000 in medicines and medical supplies, is expected to arrive tomorrow at the Conway Interfaith Clinic, which serves Central Arkansas, including hard-hit Mayflower and Vilonia.
Area residents have been coming to the clinic seeking care for storm-related injuries as well as injuries sustained while clearing rubble, said Executive Director Kittie Aaron. She expects the need for health care services to surge in the weeks ahead as patients come to replace medication lost in the storm.
“People are going to realize, ‘Hey, I don’t have my medicines, I am having breathing problems, I am having anxiety attacks from what’s going on,’ and really face the reality of what’s happened to them,” Aaron said.
AmeriCares is supplying insulin for diabetic patients, along with medications for the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions, respiratory problems and hypertension. Flashlights, face masks and other relief supplies are also included. The global health and disaster relief organization has had staff on the ground in Arkansas since Monday assessing survivors’ needs and coordinating aid deliveries, including bottled water for the Arkansas Foodbank in Little Rock.
AmeriCares has delivered medical relief and humanitarian assistance worldwide to millions affected by natural and man-made disasters for more than 30 years. The aid organization has a long history of responding to U.S. disasters including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Joplin tornado in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. After a powerful EF5 tornado last May, AmeriCares delivered more than 50 aid shipments to the Oklahoma City area to help families recover.
