While the nation engaged in the health care debate, AmeriCares was hard at work delivering critical medicines and supplies to clinics serving the poor and uninsured across the United States. In February, AmeriCares set an all-time organizational record – delivering $9 million worth of medical aid from Connecticut to California and many states in-between. It is the highest value of domestic assistance ever delivered by AmeriCares in one month.
One of the clinics AmeriCares supports with deliveries of donated medicines and medical supplies is the Kansas City Free Clinic in Kansas City, Missouri. In February, AmeriCares shipped over $180,000 worth of medical aid to the clinic. Among other things, it included medicines to treat painful ulcers, sinus problems and bladder disorders.
“It’s heartbreaking for a patient to need medication and not be able to afford to get it. Thanks to AmeriCares, our patients leave our Clinic with the medicine they need, so they can start feeling better right away,” said Peg McKee, a director at the Kansas City Free Clinic. “It’s a comfort to know that our patients don’t have to choose between buying groceries and buying medicines.”
Throughout the year AmeriCares has provided much needed relief and assistance to the less fortunate in the world and is always willing to lend a helping hand.”- Geraldine Hill, President, CEO Family Resource Centers Inc. San Diego, California
Clinics across America received shipments including medicines and medical supplies to help people suffering from asthma, hypertension, heart conditions and serious infections. To help prevent and treat colds and flu, deliveries also included over-the-counter treatments and infection control supplies such as hand sanitizer, soap and other hygiene items.
“Increasing our aid to the uninsured across the United States is giving Americans something to rely on in these uncertain times; they may lose their insurance, take a major pay cut or lose their jobs. AmeriCares is making sure they are still able to treat their medical conditions, despite everything else,” said Morgan White, AmeriCares U.S. programs manager. “Our goal is to double our domestic medical assistance in the coming years to meet the serious needs of the poor and uninsured.”
AmeriCares pledged to expand its U.S. Medical Assistance Program at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). The two-year commitment will improve community health by donating medicines and medical supplies to health care organizations serving the uninsured and underinsured throughout the country.
