Stamford, Conn. – Dec. 18, 2012 –  Shripad Desai has been named managing director of AmeriCares India, a nonprofit organization committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives. To date, AmeriCares has supported partners in 26 Indian states and union territories. As the chief AmeriCares official in Mumbai, Desai will oversee all of AmeriCares India’s aid programs including emergency response activities and medical donations to health care providers, along with health education and training programs. He is also responsible for a highly successful mobile clinic program in Mumbai’s Andheri and Chembur slums that serves 36,000 patients annually.

“We are proud to have Mr. Desai lead the AmeriCares India team in Mumbai,” said AmeriCares President and CEO Curt Welling. “Under his leadership, we hope to grow our aid programs and continue to develop innovative initiatives to help even more people suffering from disasters and chronic poverty.”

Desai brings to the job more than 20 years of experience in India’s pharmaceutical industry. He most recently served as head of sales, marketing and strategic planning for Chiron Panacea Vaccines in Mumbai, and previously held positions with Oral CDx India, Novartis, Sanofi and AstraZeneca in India. Desai earned both his Master of Marketing Management and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Mumbai.

“AmeriCares India is a great organization, doing good work all across India.  I believe that this is an opportunity for me to learn, contribute and achieve new milestones as an individual and professional,” said Desai. “I look forward to leveraging my marketing and strategy experience in the pharmaceutical industry to lead this organization forward.”

AmeriCares India is an independent public charitable trust established in 2006 to meet the health care needs of India’s most vulnerable. It is supported by the U.S.-based nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization AmeriCares, which has distributed more than $50 million in aid to India since 1986.
