Hurricanes & Climate Change – What Do We Know? Americares works on the frontlines of the health crisis from climate change. We see, first hand, its deadly effect when a Category 5 hurricane (more than 157 mph wind speed) smashes into communities exposed and unprepared. We have responded to some of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes in modern history including Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Dorian. We strengthen our disaster strategy continuously to meet the escalating health challenges of extreme weather brought on by climate change. We remain in devastated communities for many months and years, if necessary, in support of recovery and restoration efforts that build stronger, more resilient health systems and prepare for the next storm. We have confirmed again and again from decades of storm response that good preparation for the next storm will make all the difference in limiting the potential death and destruction. We know that disasters make the news, but disaster preparedness makes communities stronger, healthier and safer.
